“Aleś” is an autobiography by Belarusian human rights defender, political prisoner, and 2022 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aleś Bialacki.
The book traces his life and commitment to human rights, from the Belarusian cultural revival of the 1980s and the founding of the Viasna Human Rights Centre to political persecution, arrests, and imprisonment.
This expanded English edition includes new chapters written after his release in December 2025, reflecting on his 2021 arrest, the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to him while in prison, his 2023 trial and ten-year sentence, and more than four years behind bars.
Combining personal memories with reflections on Belarusian history, “Aleś” is a powerful testimony to courage, solidarity, and the struggle for freedom and human dignity.
