University lecturer Anton is struggling with the loss of his beloved dog and the collapse of his marriage when he agrees to help decipher a collection of mysterious notebooks discovered in a village near the bog known as the Abyss.

Written in Sütterlin, an old German script, the notebooks reveal only fragments at first. But the more Anton uncovers, the more uneasy he becomes. As the secrets hidden in the text begin to surface, he finds himself confronting a mystery that reaches far beyond the pages.
